Garage Organization for Families

An organized garage, with kids' vehicles parked in a line, and hazardous materials on high shelves.

Garages and basements are often fluctuating seasonally, and used for similar purposes in many homes: storage. Storage of sports gear, holiday items, kids'/family activities, tools, and lawn-garden-pest control are the main garage/basement zones that clients uncover during our work together. Discovering the seasonal fluctuations in your garage and determining how basement storage works with the garage two key determinants to discovering the best organization for your family.

Before we can start building an organization plan, we declutter to discover how much space we have to work with. A common decluttering barrier clients experience is not knowing how to properly dispose of hazardous materials, and many times there are items in the space leftover from the previous owners. Clients also often have donation piles ready to go, and Organization Pending takes away a car load of donations, recycling, and/or non-landfill disposal each session, even if those items weren't decluttered during that session. There's also the option to book an Upper Arlington Porch Pick Up in addition to, or separate from, home organizing services.

After decluttering, the next step is to literally take a step back, considering the space as a whole, beginning with a blank slate. At this moment, everything is possible and it's handy to have a fresh perspective and professional experience on your side as you consider your organization plan, talking you through your family's unique needs, ways to age up the space as the kids grow, and tips for taking care of the seasonal needs of the garage in the next few years.

Organization Pending's Top Three Tips for Family Garage Organization

A decluttered and organized garage with bikes, scooters, and skateboards lined up near the door.
  1. Kids of all ages appreciate a front-to-back approach to organization, putting their items near the exit points, making it easier for them to replace their toys, bikes, and other items they reach for often. Creating "parking spots" for bikes and scooters helps keep things tidy, while adding an element of fun to the task.

  2. Every client's goal is to be able to park in the garage. After decluttering, use painter's tape to mark out on the floor how much space you want for your car(s), including room to open the doors. This space planning tip immediately puts the garage into perspective, letting you know if you have enough space for the remaining items, and indicating where larger items like the mower and/or grill might fit best.

  3. Consider the garage's temperature fluctuations when organizing delicate holiday decorations and sentimental items. Garages are usually dusty and dirty, despite our best efforts, and fragile items that could get damaged are better kept inside.
